Milk comes in from hundreds of village societies, twice a day, every day.
The district that owns the dairy.
Between the farmer's doorstep and the Nandini brand sits the milk union — the tier that turns a village's milk into what reaches your fridge, run by the very farmers who fill it.

The middle tier, and the working one.
Karnataka's dairy runs on three tiers: village societies pour the milk, the Federation carries the brand, and in between, the district milk unions do the daily work of dairying. Each union gathers milk from the societies in its districts, chills it, tests it, processes it and packs it — then sends it out as Nandini.

32Districts across Karnataka
Every one is a cooperative in its own right, governed by a board its farmer-members elect.
One union, the whole morning's work.
Cooled within hours and checked for quality before it travels any further.
Milk, curd, butter, ghee and more — made and packed in the union’s own plants.
An elected board of local producers decides how the union runs.

When the union is local, the milk stays close and so does the profit.
A district union keeps milk moving over short distances and payment moving back to farmers fast. It's the reason Nandini is fresh, and the reason dairying still pays in rural Karnataka.
